RALPH M. SUTHERLIN, DO, MPH

Dr. Ralph M. Sutherlin, Board Certified in Preventive-Occupational/Aerospace Medicine and Family Medicine, is Medical Director of Preventive Health Medical Institute in Boise, Idaho.

Dr. Sutherlin became a doctor to have the ability to combat disease, alleviate suffering and pain, and teach healthy lifestyles. In the early years of medical school, choosing a specialty was a tough decision as he loved pediatrics, sports medicine, obstetrics, surgery and emergency medicine. Overall “I wanted to be a country doc, making house calls with my horse and buggy. I knew family medicine would be my best choice.  As the years evolved, time and experience shifted my focus to the importance of prevention.”

Trained in Family Medicine, he found his passion for Preventive Medicine while serving in the US Air Force.  He later obtained his Master of Public Health for Occupational and Preventive Medicine at Harvard University, and then a residency in Preventive Medicine/Aerospace Medicine/Occupational Medicine at the School of Aerospace Medicine in San Antonio, Texas.

“I was a lifeguard during summers back in high school and I knew I wanted to save lives.  I was fascinated with math and biology and wanted to learn as much as possible.   Now years later, I’ve only thought about it one way, I don’t go to work or have a job; I have a calling.  I can’t imagine ever retiring and not practicing medicine.  My medical philosophy is preventing the disease from occurring in the first place.  I have an open mind to look outside the box and try nonstandard therapies, when needed.  My focus is identifying illness and disease before they become symptomatic, with the aim to significantly reduce the occurrence of heart attacks and strokes and trying to solve the acute and chronic degeneration of our anatomy. I want to know each of my patients and touch their lives.  As a physician, I hope to influence my patients to gain balance of their physical, mental and spiritual health.”

Dr. Sutherlin is on staff at St. Luke’s and St. Alphonsus Medical Systems in Boise, Idaho and serves as the State Air Surgeon for the Idaho Air National Guard.

During his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, recreational flying and SCUBA.
